Mathematics Summer Institute Seeks Teachers & Students for Paid Participation

Experience Culminates with Meaningful Math & STEM Showcase

The Tri-County Culturally Responsive Mathematics Summer Institute, a collaboration between Oakland Schools, Washtenaw ISD, and Wayne RESA, is seeking math teachers and high school students to participate in a paid partnership.

The project is designed to provide opportunities for teachers across three counties to learn how to engage all students in meaningful, culturally responsive mathematics.

“Our goal is to bring awareness to the need and power of culturally responsive instruction,” said Dr. Jennifer Banks, Director of Instruction for the Washtenaw Intermediate School District. “The whole idea is that students find a connection for math to their real world. We want to make math something that kids actually want to engage in and learn about,” said Banks.

The Tri-County Culturally Responsive Mathematics Summer Institute will take place virtually through Zoom meetings, Monday through Thursday, June 19-29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Teachers who join the cohort will receive $2,400. Students will receive $600 for their participation from June 19-29 and another $600 for their participation from July 10-21, for a total of $1,200 for full participation in all 4 weeks.

Teachers and students will collaborate in focus group discussions, engage in learning with national scholars, and develop culturally responsive tasks from current curricular resources.
